Meet Justin Elbel
My journey with personal finance started after graduating college. Before graduating college, I had managed my finances, but I had no sense of purpose with my finances. After graduating college reality sank in because I owed over $62,000 in student loans. I was overwhelmed! I started paying down my student loan debt and tracking my progress, which motivated me to pay my loans down quickly.
While I made good progress in paying down my student loan debt I still didn’t feel great about my finances. I made some unwise decisions in my mid-to-late 20’s, like buying a new truck, which slowed my progress. Once I got engaged, my brother advised me to track my finances to see how much I spent on different categories. Tracking my finances was the best advice I was ever given! My finances became even clearer when I started tracking my spending. This allowed my wife and I to start making a budget and helped us focus on being intentional with where we were spending our money.
Fast forward a few years and my wife and I became debt-free, except for our mortgage, at 32. We don’t have high-paying salaries, but we have succeeded financially by being intentional with our finances and sticking to a plan that paid down debt, built up savings, and continually invested for retirement. The peace my wife and I now have about our finances is awesome! I believe everyone should have this same peace with their finances and that is why I started S&M Financial, to help others
